Tactics Ogre: Let us
Cling Together (1995, 2011) (official art book)
Tactics Ogre is a
Japanese tactical Role Playing Game that originally came out in 1995 and was
re-released by the original team in February 2011. The game is the last game if
the Tactics Ogre series, the previous ones being: Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis, Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen, Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber and Ogre Battle: Legend of the Zenobia Prince. In Let us Cling Together the player leads and army to liberate the
country. Un like most JRPGs the game does not have a linier plot line, but a
branching one. The decisions made within the game determine the ending the
player receives upon completion of the game.
Despite it being a
Japanese RPG, I have chosen to look at it because the art style is so unique
compared to other games of its genre. There are still the tell tale hints of
the conventional Japanese RPG style in there, but the art work has a more
mature feel and is not seen as a “cartoony”. The game also links in with
another area of my research the game is from an Isometric view and has a Job/
class system.

Denim Powell, The first page shows the same image but in three different
stages, the full-length picture is the final coloured character art, the top
right image shows where the shadows fall and the final one underneath is the
clean line art. The colouring and shading are very soft and used at points to
enhance the shadow within the line work. This gives the images an illustrative
feel and looks like a pencil sketch with watercolour or marker pen colouring.
The line work itself is quite sketchy in places allowing it to still look like
a drawing or illustration from a book. On the second page it focuses on the
head of the character and the different facial expressions for the graphic that
will appear during dialogue.
